is reality secularAuthor(s): Mary Poplin

What is the nature of reality?

At the root of our society’s deepest political and cultural divisions are the conflicting principles of four global worldviews. While each of us holds to some version of one of these worldviews, we are often unconscious of their differences as well as their underlying assumptions.

Mary Poplin argues that the ultimate test of a worldview, philosophy or ideology is whether it corresponds with reality. Since different perspectives conflict with each other, how do we make sense of the differences? And if a worldview system accurately reflects reality, what implications does that have for our thinking and living?

In this wide-ranging and perceptive study, Poplin examines four major worldviews: naturalism, humanism, pantheism and Judeo-Christian theism. She explores the fundamental assumptions of each, pressing for limitations. Ultimately she puts each perspective to the test, asking, what if this worldview is true?

If reality is secular, that means something for how we orient our lives. But if reality is not best explained by secular perspectives, that would mean something quite different. Consider for yourself what is the fundamental substance of reality.

Numbers surround us. Just try to make it through a day without using any. It’s impossible: telephone numbers, calendars, volume settings, shoe sizes, speed limits, weights, street numbers, microwave timers, TV channels, and the list goes on and on. The many advancements and branches of mathematics were developed through the centuries as people encountered problems and relied upon math to solve them. For instance:

– What timely invention was tampered with by the Caesars and almost perfected by a pope?
– Why did ten days vanish in September of 1752?
– How did Queen Victoria shorten the Sunday sermons at chapel?
– What important invention caused the world to be divided into time zones?
– What simple math problem caused the Mars Climate Orbiter to burn up in the Martian atmosphere?
– What common unit of measurement was originally based on the distance from the equator to the North Pole?
– Does water always boil at 212? Fahrenheit?
– What do Da Vinci’s Last Supper and the Parthenon have in common?
– Why is a computer glitch called a “bug”?

It’s amazing how ten simple digits can be used in an endless number of ways to benefit man. The development of these ten digits and their many uses is the fascinating story you hold in your hands: Exploring the World of Mathematics.

A guide for raising children to be Christ-following adults and parents

With three adult children, eleven grandkids, and over forty-five years in Christian education, Glen and Ellen Schuknecht are asked a lot of parenting questions. But the most common question is always “How do I raise my kids to love God and love family–even after they’ve left my nest?” The truth is that all the rules in the world will do nothing if parents don’t reach their kids’ hearts.

Through compelling, insightful stories from parents and grandparents who’ve been in the trenches, the Schuknechts demonstrate why that heart-level connection is so crucial in building long-lasting, connected relationships with a foundation of Christ. These stories are intertwined with ideas, tips, and biblical truths any parent can engage with, including a parent-coaching questionnaire to help readers build a more connected parenting style. The authors’ fresh approach empowers parents to find their own vision for their families, tailor-made to their children and their circumstances.

There’s no magic formula here–just truth, grace, and hope instead of to-do lists. Glen and Ellen come alongside fellow parents and grandparents to help them find the ideas they crave, the hope they need, and the grace they must have to raise passionate and God-connected future generations.
