Liberal Christian theology is a big topic in today’s churches and seminaries. But what does liberal theology really mean and why is it so controversial? What does it actually believe about truth, Scripture, and Jesus Christ? And where does it lead?

The term “liberal theology” is often misinterpreted, confused with a set of loose ideologies within the Christian faith and sometimes rallied behind by genuine Christians who are simply concerned about modern social justice issues. It’s also been wrongly leveled against churches and even entire denominations that don’t adhere to the tradition of liberal theology.

Against Liberal Theology, is written in a direct and conversational tone that makes sense of this theological movement by:

From the beginning of his ministry, Jesus called and equipped individuals who would serve his community of followers. These “shepherds” are called to preach, pray, and care for the needs of God’s people. But what does it mean to be a pastor? And what is the nature of this ministry, according to the Bible?

In Gospel-Driven Ministry, Jared Wilson begins by looking at the qualifications for the pastorate, addressing the notion of a call to ministry and how an individual–and a church community–can best identify the marks of maturity and affirm a call. In each chapter, Wilson looks at one of the core practices of pastoral ministry, including:

Even on the days you struggle to stay strong, you can live a resilient and hopeful life.

After receiving a devastating brain cancer diagnosis, Jay Hewitt had a decision to make: Should he give up on faith or practice what he preached and trust that with God all things are possible? In I Am Weak, I Am Strong, Jay chronicles his journey of turning toward Jesus even when circumstances urged him to turn away.

Faith in action for Jay included competing in an IRONMAN triathlon (documented in the new Amazon Prime Video Dear Hero) while undergoing cancer treatment. His race was a grand gesture of love for his young daughter–and a call to resilience for all of us.

I Am Weak, I Am Strong reminds us that our true “superpower” comes from God. As you read Jay’s honest and inspiring words, you will:

Why is this?

The church is sadly still confused about what it means to be a man or a woman. While secular society talks about sexuality in terms of liberation, many in the church define manhood and womanhood in terms of reductive roles that rob us of the dignity of personhood, created in the image of God.

Life is a hot mess. There’s the bedlam of getting out the door in the morning. The constant breaking down of our homes and bodies and the cars we drive. And the institutions that promise to help are often no better. We are surrounded by the constant disorder of governments and disappointed by “organized” religion, the very entities that tell us they can provide us sanity and security. Instead, they leave us scratching our heads or licking our wounds. Chaos surrounds us, and at times, it seems to rule our souls, our families, and our world.

But does chaos always end in failure or flaw?

What if chaos was more than the check engine light of lost causes? What if chaos was the raw material out of which God creates? In the beginning God brought order from chaos, filling the chaos with a beautiful creation, and he’s been doing it ever since. Where you and I may experience confusion and disorder, God sees an opportunity for something new–for a rebirth, a renewal, and a renovation. God did this in the beginning, he did it again at the cross, and with renewed vision for our disordered world today, we look to God to do it again.
