For centuries the story of Adam and Eve has resonated richly through the corridors of art, literature, and theology. But for most moderns, taking it at face value is incongruous. And even for many thinking Christians today who want to take seriously the authority of Scripture, insisting on a “literal” understanding of Genesis 2–3 looks painfully like a “tear here” strip between faith and science.
How can Christians of good faith move forward? Who were the historical Adam and Eve? What if we’ve been reading Genesis―and its claims regarding material origins―wrong? In what cultural context was this couple, this garden, this tree, this serpent portrayed?
Following his groundbreaking Lost World of Genesis One, John Walton explores the ancient Near Eastern context of Genesis 2–3, creating space for a faithful reading of Scripture along with full engagement with science for a new way forward in the human origins debate. As a bonus, an illuminating excursus by N. T. Wright places Adam in the implied narrative of Paul’s theology.
The Lost World of Adam and Eve will be required reading for anyone seeking to understand this foundational text historically and theologically, and wondering how to view it alongside contemporary understandings of human origins.

The inspirational true story of God sparing a young girl from being murdered and later transforming her life, as seen on The 700 Club.

By age twelve, Mary Therese Hutchinson had survived not one, not two, but four attempts on her life. Even worse, the assailant and man who had sexually abused her for years was no outsider but a trusted family member. Forced to keep much of what she endured a secret, Mary came to believe everything she’d been taught about God was a fairy tale. After all, what loving God would allow such horrible things to happen to a little girl? Or if he was real, then God had forgotten about her.
By adulthood, Mary was outwardly a successful, beautiful young woman. But unresolved trauma and hate for her abuser led to a downward spiral of despair and self-destructive choices. A stranger’s prayers became the catalyst that started Mary on a journey of emotional healing and spiritual transformation. She now knew God was no fairy tale but a loving, merciful heavenly Father who, far from abandoning her, had miraculously intervened to save her young life.

Jesus Christ was the world’s greatest teacher, and His teaching is still with us today in His parables. Eternal and heavenly truths are taught by means of these vivid, everyday stories that appeal to everyone. The parables of Jesus Christ have long challenged expositors, for in their simple form profound truths have been revealed. But the very simplicity of the parable form can be a deceptive snare to interpreters. Instead of considering the context in which the parables arose and the background against which they were spoken, many have pressed the parables to teach viewpoints that were in their minds as interpreters but that did not originate in the text itself. In THE PARABLES OF JESUS, J. Dwight Pentecost takes a balanced, sane, and systematic approach. He describes the setting of each parable, that is, the context in which it is spoken and the background against which it was delivered. Pentecost then explains the problem or question each parable addresses and the solution it contains. Since the parables were primarily designed to instruct, the emphasis is placed on the teaching rather than on the application. Here is J. Dwight Pentecost, expositor and teacher, at his best.

Biblical Theology of OT and NT: Theological Reflection of the Christian Bible
Author(s):
Brevard S. Childs (Professor of Old Testament at Yale University 1958-99)
Publisher: Fortress Press

This monumental work is the first comprehensive biblical theology to appear in many years and is the culmination of Brevard Child’s lifelong commitment to constructing a biblical theology that surmounts objections to the discipline raised over the past generation. Childs reject any approaches that overstress either the continuity or discontinuity between the Old and New Testaments. He refuses to follow the common pattern in Christian thought of identifying biblical theology with the New Testament’s interest in the Old. Rather, Childs maps out an approach that reflects on the whole Christian Bible with its two very different voices, each of which retains continuing integrity and is heard on its own terms.

How would you respond in the presence of someone who did something you had never seen done before, something you thought impossible, something that you never dreamed about?

No doubt you would be awe-struck. You might gasp and say, “Wow!” Perhaps no words would come at all. It would probably be etched into your memory forever. However many times you might speak about what you saw, you would relive that moment and still be greatly amazed.

People who saw what Jesus did and heard Him speak had similar reactions. They said such things as, “We have never heard anyone speak like this.” It was not only the friends of Jesus but even unbelievers who responded with amazement. And there were times when even Jesus Himself was amazed.

There was no special halo around Jesus that caused such reactions. Jesus fully entered into humanity. Nothing marked Him as being from another planet. He spoke, ate, slept, walked, and talked as a man.

What was there about Jesus that caused people to be so surprised?

Astonished Beyond Measure: Surprising Responses to Jesus calls attention to all the things about Jesus that astonish us; His miracles, words, authority, answers, questions, control, humility, and knowledge of all things. The more we know Him, the more wonder will fill our soul.

Even today we can stand amazed before Jesus, our Lord, and Savior! He is ever super-amazing!
