Preaching’s 2014 Best Books for Preachers
2014 Best Missions-Oriented Biblical Study, from Byron Borger, Hearts and Minds Bookstore

Just like we do today, the writers and chief actors of the Old Testament felt a deep longing for the presence of God. It is symbolized in the temple ruins, and before it the temple itself, and before that the ark of the covenant and the tabernacle that housed it, and before that the Garden of Eden.
In response to this longing, God shares his ultimate mission, in which his people play a part: the expansion of Eden, the temple of God’s presence, to all peoples throughout the earth.
The temple has always been a source of rich scholarship and theological reflection, but what does it mean for the church’s ongoing mission in the world? G. K. Beale and Mitchell Kim take temple theology off the bookshelf and bring it to our modern-day life, where the church is instructed and exhorted in its purpose. From Eden to the new Jerusalem, we are God’s temple on the earth in our day, the firstfruits of the new creation. God has always desired to dwell among us; now the church must follow its missional call to extend the borders of God’s kingdom and take his presence to the ends of the earth.

Have you experienced an ongoing trial that left you wrung out emotionally? Do you feel alone in your pain?
Though suffering often leaves us feeling isolated, God invites us into the community of the Trinity and offers us many companions in Scripture. We experience loneliness alongside the exiled Israelites. We journey with David as he pleads to God for rescue. With Asaph we confess our unbelief. With Job we learn to lament. With Mary and Martha we learn to wait.
In God’s community, there is sweet fellowship, even in the hardest of circumstances. Journey in these pages with Wendy Alsup through her story of suffering, and more importantly, with the God who walks with us in the wilderness.
This warm and contemplative book also includes a helpful appendix for those who companion a suffering loved one.

An ancient prayer for every day: “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me, a sinner.”

These words have strengthened and comforted believers for centuries. The Jesus Prayer comes to us from the Eastern Christian tradition. In these pages, John Michael Talbot explores more of the roots of the prayer along with the theological and practical meaning of each word in the lives of believers today. Readers are invited to meditate on the twelve simple words that lie at the heart of the Christian East.

Complete with historical context and exercises for self-reflection, this book shows how a single prayer could sustain the spiritual life of a civilization.
Each chapter ends with a brief practice using the prayer.

The Christian church confesses “one baptism.” But the church’s answers to how, whom and when to baptize, and even what it means or does, are famously varied. This book provides a forum for thoughtful proponents of three principal evangelical views to state their case, respond to the others, and then provide a summary response and statement. Sinclair Ferguson sets out the case for infant baptism, Bruce Ware presents the case for believers’ baptism, and Anthony Lane argues for a mixed practice.
As with any good conversation on a controversial topic, this book raises critical issues, challenges preconceptions and discloses the soft points in each view. Evangelicals who wish to understand better their own church’s practice or that of their neighbor, or who perhaps are uncertain of their own views, will value this incisive book.
