Philosophy is not a closed club or a secret society. It’s for anyone who thinks big questions are worth talking about.
To get us started, Douglas Groothuis unpacks seven pivotal sentences from the history of western philosophy―a few famous, all short, none trivial. Included are:

“The unexamined life is not worth living.”―Socrates
“You have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.”―Augustine
“I think, therefore I am.”―Decartes
“The heart has reasons, that reason knows nothing of.”―Pascal
Sentences from Protagoras, Aristotle and Kierkegaard round out this quick tour.
Since every philosopher has a story, not just a series of ideas, Groothuis also offers a bit of each one’s life to set the stage. The seven sterling sentences themselves, while they can’t tell us all there is to know, offer bridges into other lands of thought which can spark new ideas and adventures. And who knows where they might lead?

“The Christian life is life in the Spirit,” writes John Stott. “It would be impossible to be a Christian, let alone to live and grow as a Christian, without the ministry of the gracious Spirit of God. All we have and are as Christians we owe to him.”
The Holy Spirit continues to be at work around the world, as numerous renewal movements attest. Yet much confusion and controversy remain regarding the Holy Spirit’s activity. In this classic study, John Stott provides clear biblical exposition on the promise, the fruit and the gifts of the Holy Spirit. He offers particular guidance on the nature of “the baptism of the Spirit” and whether certain spiritual gifts and experiences should be normative for all Christians.
Always irenic and gracious, Stott points the way to both greater biblical understanding and deeper fullness of spiritual life.

When the Israelites exclaimed, “Here are your gods!” at the sight of the golden calf, they were attempting to hold on to the God of their history while fashioning idols for their own purposes. In today’s Western world, plenty of shiny false gods still hold power―idols of prosperity, nationalism, and self-interest. Christians desperately need to name and expose these idols. We must retrieve the biblical emphasis on idolatry and apply it anew in our journey of following Jesus.
In “Here Are Your Gods,” Old Testament scholar Christopher J. H. Wright combines a biblical study of idolatry with practical discipleship. He calls readers to consider connections between Old Testament patterns and today’s culture, especially recurring temptations to trust in political power.
Now as much as ever, we need a biblically informed understanding of the many ways humans make gods for themselves, the danger of idols, and how God calls us to join him in the battle against idolatry as part of his ongoing mission to be known and worshiped by all peoples.
