Christianity Today’s 2020 Book of the Year Award of Merit – Biblical Studies
What does it mean to “read Romans with Eastern eyes”?
Combining research from Asian scholars with his many years of experience living and working in East Asia, Jackson directs our attention to Paul’s letter to the Romans. He argues that some traditional East Asian cultural values are closer to those of the first-century biblical world than common Western cultural values. In addition, he adds his voice to the scholarship engaging the values of honor and shame in particular and their influence on biblical interpretation.
As readers, we bring our own cultural fluencies and values to the text. Our biases and backgrounds influence what we observe―and what we overlook. This book helps us consider ways we sometimes miss valuable insights because of widespread cultural blind spots.
In Reading Romans with Eastern Eyes, Jackson demonstrates how paying attention to East Asian culture provides a helpful lens for interpreting Paul’s most complex letter. When reading this way, we see how honor and shame shape so much of Paul’s message and mission.

“I don’t want to look back someday and realize I wasted my time. I want my life to count for something important.”
“This world is a very needy place. If my Christian faith means anything at all, I’ve got to figure out what I can do about it.”
Have you ever asked yourself, What difference am I making with my life? On some level, we all struggle to find our own answer to that fundamental question. The search for significance is the underlying motivation for virtually all human activity. It’s what drives us.
Whitney T. Kuniholm, president of Scripture Union/USA, addresses these core questions by taking you on a fast-paced journey through the book of Acts. He draws on the question the apostle Paul asked Jesus: “What shall I do, Lord?” (Acts 22:10).
The experiences of the first Christians show us that God has a mission, an essential mission, for all of his people―whether it is to serve him faithfully in the marketplace, in the home, in school, in the military or someplace else. The Essential Question is perfect for groups and churches that want to read the book of Acts together and then make a difference for God in their community and the world. Are you ready to answer the essential question?

Why are some people full of hope, while many of us struggle to get past the snooze alarm?
Hope often seems elusive―both to explain and to experience. So we find ourselves instead clinging to lesser substitutes. From self-medication to lazy clichés, we apply these balms to our pain and experience little to no comfort. But we know, in our guts, that these replacements are?t the hope-filled lives we long for, the lives we were made for.
Mark Oestreicher gets it. Through hard-wrought experience and robust-bordering-on-desperate theological reflection, he offers here a fresh perspective on Hope, that virtue that God carries to us even as God carries us. Read Hopecasting and discover a good God casting hope your way.

What does loneliness tell us?
“Be it chronic or acute, slight or significant, loneliness is proof of our relational design. At the core of our being is this truth―we are designed for and defined by our relationships,” former pastors Plass and Cofield write. “We were born with a relentless longing to participate in the lives of others. Fundamentally, we are relational souls.”
Our ability to make deep and emotionally satisfying connections rests on the capacity to trust, and we all know trust can be difficult. Early-life relational “programming” and patterns of attachment can serve as blueprints for relationships later in life, whether good or bad. But no matter our conditioning, God is out to reclaim and restructure the deepest terrain of the human soul by helping us shed our reactive “False Self” and put on our receptive “True Self.” Through spiritual disciplines and conscious participation in the love of the Father, Son, and Spirit, we transform our self-awareness and our connection with other people.
Authored by counselor Dr. Richard Plass and spiritual director James Cofield, The Relational Soul brings together concepts from psychology and spiritual formation. Each chapter includes introductory stories and practical “If this is true, what about you?” questions to help readers engage in relationships in more life-giving ways. When the presence of Christ and the community connect with a soul that is open, we witness the miracle of transformation.
