For thousands of years, Satan has been marshalling his forces, launching systematic attacks on the sons of Adam. He has launched his barrages against believers and unbelievers alike. For Christians, there is an advantage when facing the evil onslaughts. The Bible details the devil’s methods and tactics. Paul says in II Corinthians chapter two that we are not ignorant of Satan’s devices. We have seen him act to steal God’s word from hearts, to twist God’s word in false teaching, and to sow doubt. We have heard his favorite lies and accusations, we have observed him engendering fear, and we have witnessed him sowing tares among the wheat. But too many followers of Jesus Christ remain unaware of the varied ways that Satan weakens, blinds and sickens them. In this book, many of his modes of attack are laid out, with the goal that believers will be more thoroughly fortified against the father of lies.

For centuries, revivals—and the conversions they inspire—have played a significant role in American evangelicalism. Often unnoticed or unconsidered, however, are the particular theologies underlying these revivals and conversions to faith. With that in mind, church historian Robert Caldwell traces the fascinating story of American revival theologies from the First Great Awakening through the Second Great Awakening, from roughly 1740 to 1840. As he uncovers this aspect of American religious history, Caldwell offers a reconsideration of the theologies of figures such as George Whitefield, Jonathan Edwards, John Wesley, Joseph Bellamy, Samuel Hopkins, and Charles Finney. His scope also includes movements, such as New Divinity theology, Taylorism, Baptist revival theology, Princeton theology, and the Restorationist movement. With this study, we gain fresh insight into what it meant to become a Christian during the age of America’s great awakenings.

No formulas, no pat answers. Just real life. Real questions. Real transformation.
Approach many women in the church and if they’re being honest, they’ll tell you they
• try hard to keep it all together;
• are frustrated that being good doesn’t deliver the perfect life;
• feel trapped in expectations;
• make decisions based on “shoulds”;
• feel selfish when they say no; and
• are uncertain of their place in God’s kingdom.

Between the desire to please God, the need to feel valued, and the compulsion to make everyone around them happy, women often find themselves denying their desires. It’s safer to stay in the life of “shoulds”—even if it means being spiritually and emotionally disconnected.

“Darkly premised and brilliantly presented. The Lost Melody serves a pitch-perfect blend of history, romance, mystery, and faith.”–Booklist starred review

***

When concert pianist Vivienne Mourdant’s father dies, he leaves to her the care of an adult ward she knew nothing about. The woman is supposedly a patient at Hurstwell Asylum. The woman’s portrait is shockingly familiar to Vivienne, so when the asylum claims she was never a patient there, Vivienne is compelled to discover what happened to the figure she remembers from childhood dreams.

The longer she lingers in the deep shadows and forgotten towers at Hurstwell, the fuzzier the line between sanity and madness becomes. She hears music no one else does, receives strange missives with rose petals between the pages, and untangles far more than is safe for her to know. But can she uncover the truth about the mysterious woman she seeks? And is there anyone at Hurstwell she can trust with her suspicions?

Fan-favorite Joanna Davidson Politano casts a delightful spell with this lyrical look into the nature of women’s independence and artistic expression during the Victorian era–and now.
