We often use the word faith without thinking much about its meaning. We know that without faith, it is impossible to please God and that faith is the core and foundation of daily Christian living. But what is faith? Author Joel R. Beeke believes we can best understand faith by seeing how it operates by the Spirit in the lives of fallen sinners like us. Accordingly, he considers essential aspects of faith operating in the lives of Adam and Eve, the Shunammite woman, the Canaanite woman, and Caleb. With pastoral warmth, he challenges readers to ask themselves three questions: Do I have this kind of faith? Am I exercising the particular aspect of faith being described? How can this example of a particular dimension of faith be used in my life to make me a mature believer? Study questions for each chapter encourage meaningful reflection for both individual and group study.

When thinking about Christ’s birth, we often focus our attention on Luke’s detailed gospel account. But to appreciate the main point of the story—that the eternal Son of God assumed our flesh-and-blood human nature—we need to learn from the rest of the Bible why Christ came to earth. Why did Christ come? In this book, thirty-one thoughtful meditations answer this vital question, and the answers encourage us to celebrate Christ’s birth more deeply, see more clearly how it is connected with the rest of His ministry, and recognize its importance for our lives.

Table of Contents:
Preface
To Do the Will of the Father
To Save Sinners
To Bring Light to a Dark World
To Be Made Like His People
To Bear Witness to the Truth
To Destroy the Works of the Devil

Realizing our deficits of spiritual grace can be shocking. We see a chasm between what we know as Christians and what we practice as Christians. But this chasm is not impassable, for the Holy Spirit, the Helper sent from the Father and the Son, works with and within us to traverse that gap. For the Christian, through all of life’s circumstances and our changing conditions, growing in grace is our priority. And God gives what He commands. He gives us means and tools to use that can truly, daily, bring us nearer to the ever-urgent goal of godliness. This book is one of those tools. Growing in Grace presents thirteen essays to assist in your pursuit of godliness.

Table of Contents:
1. Why Spiritual Growth is Important—Stephen Myers
Scriptural Studies
2. Growing in Grace through the Psalms—Rhett Dodson
3. Growing in the Fear of the LORD—Daniel Timmer
4. Growing in Repentance and Faith (James 4:6–10)—Joseph Pipa

The Christian life is a race. Through the gospel, God summons us to sustained and persevering effort. He empowers His children by grace—free and undeserved blessing through Christ. But He does not carry them to heaven on flowery beds of ease. Faith is a living, athletic grace. God’s mercy motivates Christians and energizes them to press on and overcome great obstacles. Christ blazed the trail before us. He now calls us to follow Him to the end (Hebrews 12:1–2). Looking unto Jesus—that is how we persevere. In Him is everything we need. But realistically speaking, Christians are not always pressing forward. Sometimes they wander off the narrow path, slip, and injure themselves. To the confused and injured runner, this book says, “God can help you. You can finish this race—and finish it well.”

Drawing from the wisdom of the Scriptures and aided by the insights of godly Bible teachers through the centuries, Getting Back in the Race addresses the age-old problem of backsliding. Backsliding is a season in the life of a professing Christian when his sin grows stronger and his obedience to God declines. The beginning of the book uncovers signs of sliding into a spiritual rut, for this is often more subtle than falling into scandalous sins. The rest of the book shows that there is hope for the backslider. God is so amazing! Even though our backsliding insults Him, dishonors Him, grieves Him, and pushes away His love, still He calls us to return to Him. When you grasp hold of God’s methods by faith, you discover that Christ has grasped hold of you. Our spiritual Physician has potent medicines to heal His people from their injuries and get them back on track to finish the race. This book is a wake-up call to careless Christians and an encouragement to all believers to keep running to the Lord.

The apostle Paul instructed Timothy to preach the word! . . . ‘Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching’ (2 Tim. 4:2). This instruction is in keeping with the principle reflected in the book of Acts that the proclamation of God’s Word is the heart of corporate worship. Yet in many churches, preaching is in decline under the influence of a culture that prefers entertainment to exposition. In this volume, fourteen experienced preachers reaffirm the centrality of preaching in the life of the church as they explore what the Scriptures have to say about the mandate, meaning, motivation, and method of preaching. With wisdom and conviction, the authors remind the church that God works through the faithful preaching of His Word, no less in the twenty-first century than in the first.
