To be a missionary to Canadian Indians in the late 1800s meant you had to be brave and relentless. It meant nearly freezing when sleeping outside in 50-below-zero weather. It meant canoeing upstream for hundreds of miles to reach remote Indian villages. It meant eating wild cat and other stranger things, or eating nothing for days at a time. But it also meant you were privileged to present the good news of the true Great Spirit to those who were often misunderstood and mistreated. The adventures in this book are rivaled only by the incredible conversions of those who saw the Creator in nature and then worshipped Him too. You will be challenged and inspired by the results of one man who went where the Lord led, with little regard for himself.
About the Author
Egerton Ryerson Young was a teacher, pastor, author, and a brave missionary to remote Canadian Indians. Young’s mother died in 1842, and consequently he was raised by his stepmother, Maria Farley. After a brief stint as a school teacher, Young was ordained and called to a pastorate of the First Methodist Church in Hamilton. In 1868, however, he was invited to become a missionary to the natives of Rupert’s Land. After praying over this with his new wife, Elizabeth, he asked her what she thought about this call. “I think it is from God and we will go,” was her reply. What happens next is the compelling story of this book.

There has perhaps never been an age that set such great store in study as that in which we now live. The unfortunate thing about it is that so much of the study in our day is devoted to books and subjects in which there is little or no profit. Time is squandered on the purely speculative, the uncertain, the unprofitable, the unessential, the unproductive, the irrelevant, and the transitory. The most profitable of all study is wisely ordered Bible study. Its value is incalculable. It is beyond all comparison more profitable than any other study. It is the one superlatively profitable study.
Bible study towers above all other studies in importance and value not only because of what the Bible is, but also because of what the Bible does.
The Bible properly studied makes men wise unto salvation.
The Bible makes Jesus Christ known so as to lead anyone who studies it to believe in Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God, and thereby to obtain eternal life in His name.
The Bible imparts God’s own nature to the men, women, and children who study it as they should and thus completely transforms their inmost and their outward life.
When properly studied, this Book makes the one who studies it grow like the palm tree in all the graces and glories of Christian character.
The Bible properly studied makes the heart pure and keeps the life white.
The Bible, properly studied, brings peace, wonderful peace, to the troubled heart.
The Bible, properly studied, brings joy as well as peace.
In this book, I will tell you how to properly study the Bible: for light and not for darkness, for life and not for death, for blessing and not for cursing, and so it will lift us up to heaven and not sink us down to hell.

Except you repent, you will all likewise perish. – Luke 13:5
It is indifference that leaves people alone and allows them to go their own way. It is love, tender love, that warns them and raises the cry of alarm. The cry of “Fire! Fire!” at midnight might sometimes rudely, harshly, and unpleasantly startle a person out of his sleep, but who would complain if that cry was the means of saving his life? The words Except you repent, you will all likewise perish might at first seem stern and severe, but they are words of love, and they could be the means of delivering precious souls from hell.
1.The nature of repentance: What is it?
2.The necessity of repentance: Why is repentance needful?
3.The encouragements to repentance: What is there to lead people to repent?

This is Frankie San’s story. Born in Tokyo to a Buddhist family, Frankie San’s childhood was marked by sickness and quarantine, parental divorce, and fighting for Japan in WWII at 14 years of age. Experiencing major depression, he tried to end his life – but God had a better plan.
Light filled Frankie San’s heart and soul after an American missionary introduced him to Jesus Christ. Through miraculously opened doors, Frankie San traveled to the United States to attend seminary. He overcame cultural and language barriers and prayed for direction for his future. Direction came in the form of busses filled with prisoners.
When Frankie learned where the busses took their prisoners, he surprised the director with his request to visit the prison and perplexed him when he wanted to remain. What happened next was incredible love confirmed by action, as Frankie literally believed and followed through on those famous words from Scripture: Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me (Matthew 25:40).
Frankie San’s life and testimony is unique, heartwarming, and inspiring. You’ll be challenged to love those who can give nothing back, to truly trust Christ as you follow Him, and to persevere despite overwhelming odds. If it’s not too late for prisoners on death row, it’s not too late for you and me. Follow me, said Jesus, and I will make you fishers of men.

Only fear the Lord and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for consider what great things He has done for you. – 1 Samuel 12:24
If there is a true faith, there must be a declaration of it. If you are a candle, and God has lit you, then let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in the heavens (Matthew 5:16). Soldiers of Christ must, like soldiers of our nation, wear their uniforms; and if they are ashamed of their uniforms, they ought to be drummed out of the army.
I believe that many Christians get into a lot of trouble by not being honest in their convictions. For instance, if a person goes into a workshop, or a soldier into a barracks, and if he does not fly his flag from the beginning, it will be very difficult for him to run it up afterwards. But if he immediately and boldly lets them know, “I am a Christian, and there are certain things that I cannot do to please you, and certain other things that I cannot help doing even though they might displease you” – when that is clearly understood, after a while the peculiarity of the thing will be gone, and the person will be let alone.

Because God is personal and relational, He desires a personal relationship with every one of us. God invites us to come apart each day for some quiet time with Jesus. When we do this, our Lord speaks and we hear; then He hears as we share our hearts, and He changes us in His presence.
Daily quiet times with Jesus are an amazing and treasured opportunity. The life-changing principle we can apply in His presence each day is Because God . . . I Can. Because God what? Because He speaks, acts, reveals, empowers, loves – because He is with me in this moment and always, I can.
What can I be or do because of who God is and what He does? This devotional focuses on twelve foundational practices we are called and enabled to live as we walk with God. Each month a different practice is emphasized that I can live today Because God . . . Each day of the month another truth about God is highlighted regarding that theme, which leads to increasingly understand how I Can be living this practice today.

Morning by Morning
Charles H. Spurgeon’s devotionals Morning by Morning and Evening by Evening have inspired, encouraged, and challenged Christians for generations. Spurgeon, with his masterful hand, carefully selected his text from throughout the Bible and covered a broad range of topics, in order to present a well-balanced and fruitful daily devotional for readers both young and old.
Now updated into more-modern English for today’s readers, and again separated into two volumes as originally published, with morning devotionals in one volume and evening devotionals in the second. We chose a 11-point font for the sake of legibility, and formatted the devotionals so each fits on a single page.
