Expository Study of Psalm 23 Reveals the Beauty and Deep Theological Meaning behind a Familiar Part of Scripture

Psalm 23 is one of the most recognizable passages in the whole Bible. Though relatively short, this poetic depiction of God’s love epitomizes Christ’s goodness and provision as he leads his children. Even lifelong Christians will find fresh encouragement by closely studying these familiar words.

David Gibson walks through each verse in Psalm 23, thoroughly examining its 3 depictions of the believer’s union with Christ as sheep and shepherd, traveler and companion, and guest and host. Gibson provides canonical context for the Psalm’s beautiful imagery, inspiring praise and wonder as readers reflect on the loving Shepherd who meets every need.

“Horace Williams Jr once found happiness in the things of the world—career, work promotion, and wealth—until he realized everlasting happiness is with Christ. He once spoke about God to his bedridden father, who had dementia, and his father cried tears of joy, grateful for having known God during his time. A bug-hater, he once chased after a bug that skittered to his bedroom, and behold, he learnt God works in mysterious ways. In The Amazing God: Seven Divine Attributes That Will Change Your Life Forever, he opens up about his life, mostly about why he loves God and why he would like everyone, especially the lost, to also love God.

This book helps readers understand God. In difficult times, one might ask, “Where is God?” While reading scripture, one might come across verses that contradict each other in their portrayal of God or that call for a deeper understanding. Horace, therefore, delves deeper, drawing on the Bible and his personal experiences. One by one, he reveals God to the readers, explains the scriptures, and teaches about forgiveness.

Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ

Who is Jesus Christ?

You’ve never met him in person, and you don’t know anyone who has. But there is a way to know who he is. How? Jesus Christ-the divine Person revealed in the Bible-has a unique excellence and a spiritual beauty that speaks directly to our souls and says, “Yes, this is truth.” It’s like seeing the sun and knowing that it is light, or tasting honey and knowing that it is sweet.

The depth and complexity of Jesus shatter our simple mental frameworks. He baffled proud scribes with his wisdom but was understood and loved by children. He calmed a raging storm with a word but would not get himself down from the cross.

Look at the Jesus of the Bible. Keep your eyes open, and fill them with the portrait of Jesus in God’s Word. Jesus said, “If anyone’s will is to do God’s will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority.” Ask God for the grace to do his will, and you will see the truth of his Son.

John Piper has written this book in the hope that all will see Jesus for who he really is and will come to enjoy him above all else.

The Man of Jesus: Theological Reflections on the Humanity of Christ

Liberal attacks on the doctrine of the divinity of Christ have led evangelicals to rightly affirm the centrality of Jesus’s divine nature for his person and work. At times, however, this defense of orthodoxy has led some to neglect Christ’s full humanity. To counteract this oversight, theologian Bruce Ware takes readers back to the biblical text, where we meet a profoundly human Jesus who struggled with many of the same difficulties and limitations we face today. Like us, he grew in faith and wisdom, tested by every temptation common to man. And like us, he too received power for godliness through the Holy Spirit, and thus serves not only as the divine Lord to be worshiped, but also the supreme Human to be followed.
