Hero. Someone we admire, someone we want to be like. But does your idea of a hero include someone poor in spirit? Meek? Merciful? In this fresh look at the Beatitudes, Iain M. Duguid shows how Jesus turns our concept of a hero upside-down. The Beatitudes hold out to us a higher form of heroism—the character and attitudes found in the Hero of heroes.

The Bible: The Big Picture is a resource for students, fledgling churches or individuals wanting to have an overview of what the Bible is about. It does not seek to replace the individual study of Biblical doctrines or even history but more as an encouragement to do so.

In essence, the book started off as a chronology of events within the Old Testament but that led to what could be regarded as a timeline related to the ‘people of God’ and how God’s promises were and still are linked to the nation or individual’s responsibilities.

There is a précis for each book of the Bible and a one-line statement for each chapter within each book together with an Appendix giving details of various related places and journeys.

The closing parts of the book deal mainly with the growth of the early Christian church up until the time of Constantine in 325 AD and cover the opposition from without ‘persecution’ and also from within ‘heresy’.

The Bible: The Big Picture is not interspersed with references to chapters and verses since the idea was to assume that the reader might well doubt the veracity of the Bible and hence not value proof from within the Bible. Hopefully, the result is something that is easy to read and interesting enough to generate further investigation.

In an interview with Christianity Today in 2012, Ed Stetzer shared that according to LifeWay research among young adults who had attended church regularly for at least a year in high school, 70% stop attending regularly for at least a year between ages 18-22. However, 35% of these had returned to attending twice a month or more by the time they were surveyed for the study. This means that about 4 out of 10 kids leave the church and NEVER RETURN.

Here is how leading experts describe our church kids today: They are unarmed and incapable of defending their faith. They possess a faith that cannot withstand the scrutiny of trials or intellectual questions. They have a shallow belief system. They lack a robust faith. They haven’t learned how to think. They are embarrassingly ignorant of our faith.

It’s easy to pray for others’ needs. If God takes a long time in answering–or answers with a no–it’s easier to take. Far more difficult is focusing on your own needs when sometimes you don’t get the answers you want. What do you pray when life gets hard or even unbearable? When you lose a spouse or a child? When your health deteriorates? When your spiritual life seems barren? Linda Evans Shepherd knows what it’s like to pray in the direst of circumstances. She shows readers how what, and when of praying for themselves. As she takes readers through her own prayer journey and the stories of others, they will be encouraged and equipped to pray for themselves in any circumstance. They’ll also find that whether or not God changes their circumstances, he will use prayer to change them.

Saints. Most of us know them only from church names and grotesque figures in classic paintings and stained-glass windows.

But who were these people dubbed “saints”? What are the facts behind the legends, the real human beings with all the weaknesses common to mankind who somehow made their mark in history as holy men and women?

Saints and Non-Saints dig into the sense and nonsense in the lives and legends of fifteen famous saints, ranging from larger-than-life figures like Augustine to shadowy legends like Nicholas and Valentine.

Some were saints in the biblical sense—they knew Christ as their personal Savior—while others were merely religious by human standards. All, however, are fascinating personalities whose careers have profound lessons to teach us.

“I want to go to Heaven. There must be something I can do to get there. Just name it.”

So ran the conversation between Jesus and the young politician. And so concurs the thoughts of seekers today.

But what if—in spite of your sincerity—there is one thing standing in your way?

Jesus told the young ruler there was. Throughout Jesus’ ministry, He helped many confront the “one thing” standing between them and God.

A respected religious teacher. A common woman. A blind outcast. Although it would seem they lived worlds apart, they all had one thing in common—the fact that there was one thing standing between them and God.

One decision. One choice. One roadblock. One thing.

Will you confront it?
