A Comprehensive Anthology of Prayers and Petitions throughout Church History

Throughout history, Christians have sought guidance to bolster their spiritual walk with Christ and life of prayer. Even Christ’s disciples would ask, “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1). But in our current individualistic culture, it’s almost too easy to neglect the wisdom of those who came before us.

To restore a love of historic Christian tradition, theology, and practice, this comprehensive anthology combines prayers and petitions of the greatest figures throughout the formation of the church, continuing through the medieval, Reformation, and modern eras. Editors Jonathan W. Arnold and Zachariah M. Carter provide context for each prayer through expert introductions, commentary, and biographical explorations. Ultimately readers will be encouraged in their faith as they learn the importance of prayer and witness the hearts and struggles of the saints.

Epistles of John: A New Testament Commentary

Author(s): Bob Yandian
Publisher: Harrison House Publishers
Price: $0.99       Buy Now!

John Examines the Power of True Bible Doctrine Through the Lens of Love

Before being exiled to the island of Patmos where he wrote the book of Revelation, the apostle John penned three letters to the church at Ephesus. The Ephesian church was the largest in the ancient world and faced, as many churches of that time did, the dangerous doctrines of Jewish legalism and Hellenistic Gnosticism. The church was also dealing with false leaders more interested in gain and fame than in spreading the truth of the gospel. In response, John, who was the church’s pastor for a time, wrote the Johannine epistles. And, as in his gospel, John addresses all of these issues through the lens of God’s love.

Bob Yandian delves into John’s letters, verse by verse, using context and his own pastoral sagacity to illuminate John’s messages. In doing so, Pastor Yandian first provides historical and biblical background—including observance of the original Greek language—to bring alive the truths in John’s three letters. Pastor Yandian then encourages modern believers to apply these truths in response to God’s pure and unfailing love.

What the Bible teaches about the Trinity

Author(s): Stuart Olyott
Publisher: Evangelical Press
Price: $4.99       Buy Now!

Do you have problems understanding what the Bible teaches about the Trinity, or have you had to try to answer people who do not believe that Jesus Christ is God and who deny that the one God is three, and that there are three who are God. Could they possibly be right? How can we answer them?

In this book Stuart Olyott shows that the doctrine of the Trinity is plainly taught in the Bible, and that it is the foundation for a true understanding of the Christian gospel. The book is written in straightforward language and is intended for the ordinary reader. Although it certainly shows up the error of the modern cults, its main purpose is to lead people to a better understanding of what God has revealed about Himself in His Word.

Stuart Olyott, born in Pakistan in 1942, was brought up in Asia, Chester and West Wales. He has held pastorates in London, Liverpool and Lausanne and served both Bryntirion College and the Evangelical Movement of Wales. He travels widely as a conference speaker and is the author of several books, including a companion to this volume (What the Bible Teaches About the Person of Christ), and four titles in the Welwyn Commentary series (Ecclesiastes and Song of Solomon, Daniel, Romans, Ephesians).

Charles Grandison Finney was the foremost evangelist in the pre-Civil War United States. His revivals in the cities along the Erie Canal; his well-organized campaigns in Philadelphia, New York City, Boston, and the British Isles; his prominent pastorate at New York’s Broadway Tabernacle; and his teaching career at Oberlin College exemplify the evangelical spirit that swept the country following the Second Great Awakening. This lively biography by historian Charles E. Hambrick-Stowe tells the story of Finney’s remarkable life and offers fresh insights into the nature of evangelicalism and the nineteenth-century American experience. By using the life of the great revivalist and educator as a window into the soul of American evangelicalism, Hambrick-Stowe shows in striking ways how Finney displayed the characteristics of that broader movement, many of which continue to flourish in twentieth-century religious life. Based on a thorough reading of the Finney Papers, Finney’s writings, contemporary sources, and modern historiography, this biography exhibits scholarly depth in a popular narrative that is meant to be read and enjoyed as well as studied. A map of Finney’s evangelistic travels, portraits, and other illustrations enhance the text.

I had not the most distant idea until recently, that these Lectures, in this, or any other form, would ever grow into a book: but the urgent call for their publication, in a volume, and the fact that I have had repeated assurances that the reading of them in the Evangelist, has been owned and blessed, to the quickening of individuals and churches, and has resulted in the conversion of many sinners, have led me to consent to their publication in this imperfect form.
